I supported Barack Obama from the beginning of the Democratic primary process, not so much because of his policy stances with regards to his competitors, but because of what I saw as his nuanced understanding of process as well as policy. I also thought that the greater emphasis he would give to long-term issues such as government transparency and energy would ultimately make him a successful president. So far he has used his transition honeymoon period to shine a spotlight on the perpetually ignored issues broadband access, infrastructure spending, and most recently, urban policy. In addition, he has moved aggressively on the one issue the primary season left me worried about – health care. The one thing missing would be putting some serious emphasis on drug policy reform, but I’m not holding my breath.
